Southern California Spine Institute Medical Mentors is a nonprofit volunteer organization established to introduce high school youth to the world of medicine and to expose them to the career and life opportunities of service that are possible in the medical field. The program is based on the principle that “one must be able to see and envision in order to become.”
Though available to teenagers from all walks of life, it has been developed to expose inner-city teens and the underprivileged to the rewarding opportunities and stimulating career paths available in the field of medicine. If one only knows violence and that is all they see, that is where they will likely end up. A young person must be able to see to dream.
Medical Career Opportunities
Medicine is a universe of exciting and challenging career opportunities, from trauma surgeon, O.R. tech, E.R. staff team member to researcher and teacher. The types of opportunities are endless. We feel that proper exposure can lead to dreams. There may be some young person wandering the streets of L.A. with visions of guns and violence in his heart but he may be carrying in his head the creativity and genius to cure cancer. The young person with the potential to cure AIDS may be sitting on a street corner debating whether he or she should try drugs for the first time or not. Think of the wasted opportunities, the wasted lives.
We also focus on the young person at the opposite end of the spectrum – the directed young person who wants to go into the medical field. Here we offer the opportunity to don a white coat or put on surgical scrubs and experience firsthand the O.R., E.R. and the hospital clinic to hopefully inspire them to pursue their dreams and help them crystallize their educational direction, as well as helping them make connections with those who may be able to guide them along the way.
Services
Through one-on-one mentoring, we open up a universe of career and life opportunities in medicine which can provide a lifetime of fulfillment and rewards in what is still truly a service-oriented calling. The opportunity to serve and help others in whatever capacity can still be found in the medical arena in a myriad of rewarding careers. Transportation can be arranged to and from the medical facility for those who may need it. Meals are provided. White coats and/or surgical scrubs are provided for the day. We hope to create inspiration, dreams, direction and connections that will last a lifetime.
